The ATFE basically says any firearm made before 1898 that is muzzleloading or shoots a cartridge that is no longer available qualifies it as an antique.The Hawken and Renegade are advertised as being .500 bore with .006” grooves. This gives you a total space of .512” that you need to work off of. Subtract the .490 ball and this means you need to make up .022” of space. The guns had a 1:60" twist, with a shallow .003" to .005" depth, and were specifically built to take big powder charges. You can find the bench design online or in Chris Schwarz's book "Workbenches". When I got to the range I wiped the bore, poured 60 grains of Pyrodex RS down the hole and started the pre lubed bullet.
